Prof. Stuart S. P. Parkin

Stuart Parkin, a British experimental physicist, is a senior scientist at the research center at IBM Almaden, professor at Stanford University and director of the joint IBM Stanford Center for Spintronics (SPINAPS). In 2014, he was appointed as Alexander von Humboldt Professor and director of the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle. He has made important contributions towards gaining an understanding of Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR). Among the numerous prestigious awards and honorary doctorates Parkin received so far are the American Physical Society International New Materials Prize of 1994 and the Humboldt Research Prize of 2004. Recently, he was awarded the Millennium Technology Prize for technological innovations that enhance the Quality of people's lives in a sustainable manner.
